Embroidery Cutaway Backing for Clothing

A strong foundation is important. Embroidery backing provides garment stability. We offer a solution for each of the common types of embroidery backing.
Basic Cutaway Embroidery Backing is the most commonly used for knitted garments, T–shirts and fleece jackets. It is a nonwoven backing, designed specifically for machine embroidery. Although available in several weights, we recommend the 55g/m² for most applications. It can be used on all types of knits but is particularly recommended for heavier knits and fleece jackets.
We recommend our SVQ60 (60g/m²) or if you require a fusible backing, our SVQ 60 FLC. Available in white or charcoal. See product specification for roll sizes.
No–show backing is a very lightweight, waffle–weave cutaway backing, ideal for lightweight and pastel knit fabrics. Sometimes referred to as mesh backing. This is a highly recommended type of cutaway but so soft that we recommend a layer of tearaway backing underneath for extra stability, especially if your logo contains small characters.
We recommend our SSM22 (22g/m²) white or SVQ30 (30g/m²) charcoal or if you require a fusible backing, SSM22 FLC and SVQ30 FLC. See product specification for roll sizes.
Tearaway backing is best for woven fabrics, including denim, chambray, twill, nylon oxford and canvas. Use also for dress shirts, bags, aprons, flags, sheets, pillowcases, tablecloths, napkins, towels and washcloths. For better effect, you can use two layers of 30–49g/m– weight tearaway. To ensure small characters look crisp and to prevent puckering, you could add a third layer. In that case, only hoop the first two layers and place the third under the garment after it is on the machine. The extra layer actually makes the columns in the lettering wider.
For tearaway backing, we recommend SVQ30 (30g/m²) and SVQ40 (40g/m²) or for fusible backing, SVQ30 FLC or SVQ40 FLC. Available in white and charcoal. See product specification for roll sizes. Please contact us for non–standard rolls sizes.
Cap backing is generally over 75g/m² heavy tearaway backing. Perfect for the front, sides and back of hats. Generally used in 4” wide strips, cut specifically to fit the front of caps. One layer works well for most caps though sometimes designs on an unstructured cap look sharper if you use more than one layer. In those instances, hoop one layer into the cap when you put it onto the cap frame and then lay the extra layer into the cap as you attach the frame to the cap driver on the embroidery machine. This doesn’t take that much extra time and it makes a huge difference. Your lettering will be much flatter and will not pull in as much.
We recommend our 805 (80g/m²) or 1005 (120g/m²) or if a fusible backing is required, the 8055 or 1355. We can also supply the heaviest weight in a doublesided fusible version. Available in white. See product specification for roll sizes. Please contact us for non–standard rolls sizes.
